How Numbers to Excel Conversion Works

Upload the .numbers file and it is read with the import filter LibreOffice ships for Apple formats, then written out as XLSX. Sheets, cell values, number formats and formulas come across.

One spreadsheet goes through per run, and the workbook is ready to download when the job finishes. Nothing has to be installed, and no Apple device is needed.

Why Convert From Numbers

Numbers is the spreadsheet that comes with macOS and iOS, and its files open nowhere else. Anyone on Windows, Android or a work laptop without iWork simply cannot read them.

XLSX is the format Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc and every data tool expect, so a converted file can be edited, shared and imported without anyone asking what a .numbers file is.

Common Use Cases

Sending a budget, a price list or a timesheet to colleagues who work in Excel, where a .numbers attachment is a dead end.

Feeding a spreadsheet into something that only reads XLSX: an accounting import, a reporting pipeline or a Python script.

What Carries Over

Every sheet and table, the cell values, number and date formats, and formulas that have an Excel equivalent. The workbook keeps recalculating rather than arriving as frozen values.

Numbers features that Excel has no place for do not survive: interactive charts, sheet-level images placed outside a table, and the free-form canvas layout that Numbers allows. Check a converted sheet before passing it on.

Tips Before You Convert

A .numbers file saved as a folder rather than a single document cannot be read. In Numbers, use Save As and leave the package option off, or export a copy, so you upload one file.

If the spreadsheet holds several tables on one sheet, look at the result first: Excel puts one grid per sheet, so tables that sat side by side in Numbers are laid out one after another.
