What is a PPTX file?
PPTX is the presentation format of Microsoft PowerPoint since 2007. The file is a ZIP package: each slide is an XML part that references a layout, which in turn references a slide master, so a theme change propagates to every slide. Images, audio and video sit in a media folder inside the package.
Animations, transitions, speaker notes and embedded fonts are all supported by the standard (ISO/IEC 29500). Other applications, from Keynote to Google Slides and LibreOffice Impress, read PPTX well for static content but often simplify animations.
When PPTX is the right choice
Strengths
- Editable slides with layouts, masters, notes and animations
- Opened by PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides and LibreOffice
- Media and fonts can be embedded so the deck travels as one file
Limitations
- Large decks with video or many photos become heavy to e-mail
- Animations and fonts render differently across applications
- Not a fixed final copy: recipients can change the slides
How to open a PPTX file
PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, LibreOffice Impress and the PowerPoint mobile apps open PPTX. When the audience only needs to read the slides, PowerPoint to PDF makes a file that opens in any browser and prints predictably.
How to convert a PPTX
PowerPoint to PDF is the standard way to distribute a deck. Old PPT files upgrade with PPT to PPTX, Keynote decks convert with Keynote to PPTX, and a PDF can go back to slides with PDF to PowerPoint.
