How much smaller is WEBM compared to GIF?
It depends on what the GIF shows. In our tests an 8.5 MB footage-style GIF became a 598 KB WEBM (93% smaller), a pixel-art animation shrank by 86%, and a small flat UI animation only by 62% (51 KB to 19 KB). Every frame and the timing were kept.
Which browsers support WEBM format?
All current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari play WEBM. Only Internet Explorer and old Safari versions can't. If you need to reach old browsers, provide an MP4 fallback.
Is WEBM better than MP4 for web use?
Not always. At our converters' default settings the MP4 came out smaller on two of our three test clips, and WEBM won only on pixel art. Choose WEBM when you need transparency or serve the video on your own site; choose MP4 when it has to play everywhere, including older devices and apps.
Does WEBM support transparency like GIF?
Yes. WEBM with the VP9 codec supports an alpha channel, and our converter keeps it: transparent areas of the GIF stay transparent in the WEBM. That makes it a good choice for animated overlays and graphics on transparent backgrounds.
