Convert ZIP to 7Z Online
Transform your ZIP archives to 7Z format for maximum compression. The 7Z format typically achieves 30-70% smaller file sizes compared to ZIP, making it ideal for large archives, long-term storage, and bandwidth-sensitive transfers.
Our converter extracts ZIP contents and recompresses them using 7Z's powerful LZMA2 algorithm. All files and folder structure are preserved during conversion.
Why Convert ZIP to 7Z?
- Superior compression — 7Z uses LZMA2 algorithm for significantly better compression ratios
- Smaller files — reduce storage costs and transfer times dramatically
- Solid archives — 7Z compresses multiple files together for even better results
- Large file support — handles files up to 16 exabytes
- AES-256 encryption — strong encryption option for sensitive data
About 7Z Format
7Z is a modern archive format created by Igor Pavlov for the 7-Zip archiver. It supports multiple compression methods, with LZMA and LZMA2 being the most popular. The format's "solid" compression mode analyzes files together, finding redundancies across the entire archive for exceptional compression ratios.
While 7Z achieves excellent compression, extraction requires 7-Zip or compatible software. For maximum compatibility, ZIP may still be preferred. Choose 7Z when file size is more important than universal compatibility.
Compression Comparison
ZIP uses DEFLATE compression from 1993. 7Z uses LZMA2 which analyzes larger data blocks and finds more redundancies. For text-heavy archives (source code, documents), 7Z often achieves 50-70% smaller sizes. For already-compressed content (images, videos), gains are more modest.
The LZMA2 algorithm in 7Z uses dictionary sizes up to 1.5 GB, compared to ZIP's 32 KB limit. This allows 7Z to find patterns across much larger spans of data, resulting in superior compression for files with repeated structures like source code, log files, and databases.
When to Keep ZIP Instead
While 7Z offers superior compression, ZIP remains the better choice in several scenarios. Email attachments and file sharing often work better with ZIP due to universal support. Windows built-in extraction handles ZIP without additional software. Mobile devices and older systems may lack 7Z support.
Consider your audience when choosing formats. For software distribution to technical users, 7Z saves bandwidth. For documents shared with general users, ZIP's compatibility advantages outweigh the larger file size.
Self-Extracting Archives
7-Zip can create self-extracting .exe archives that recipients can open without any archive software. This feature is useful for distributing to users who may not have 7-Zip installed. However, self- extracting archives only work on Windows and may trigger security warnings from antivirus software and email systems due to their executable nature.
Note that our online converter creates standard .7z archives, not self-extracting executables. To create self-extracting archives, use the 7-Zip desktop application after conversion.
Solid vs Non-Solid Archives
7Z's "solid" compression mode treats multiple files as one continuous data stream, finding redundancies across file boundaries. This can dramatically improve compression for archives with many similar files (source code, documents). The trade-off: extracting a single file requires processing all preceding files in the archive, making random access slower.
